Self-portrait

This is Chen Xi Ruo. Call me Nicole or simply Ruo. I'm a bilingual filmmaker with roots tracing back to the urban landscape of Shenzhen, China. From my earliest years, the enchantment of film, particularly those from Hong Kong in the 80s and 90s, has held me captive. I still recall sneaking countless viewings during school breaks, risking reprimand and punishment for neglecting my studies and chores. Ah... that classic case of no pain, no gain...

My journey into filmmaking started with an unexpected twist—I pursued a PADI certification despite my deep fear of water. It took me four months to learn to tread, but I eventually earned the certification. With awe on my face, that experience prompted me to question: why not give my untouchable dream of becoming a storyteller, a filmmaker, a chance?

And so, the story unfolds. I left behind my steady 9-5 job and declined an offer from Toi Whakari. Driven by the desire to explore whether I could create stories myself, the recognition my debut short film received at festivals in Norwich and New York spurred me on, urging me to push forward on my creative path. Upon finishing my MA in Screen Production, I was pleasantly taken aback by the unexpected opportunities, especially the chance to create a bilingual campaign ad for Comvita. Winning a silver award further opened doors in my journey as a commercial director. And amid it all, I've ventured into acting, embracing each new role with gratitude and a hunger for growth.

Life, to this day, continues to surprise me with serendipity at every turn. And film, to me, is a passion that has become a part of me, a personal truth and a therapeutic journey of self-discovery.
